ARMOUR YOURSELF FOR
THE WORKING WORLD!
NICOLE CHOO
15 NOV 2019
As someone who is about to embark onto the next step after university, it can be extremely difficult and challenging. To be honest, no amount of tutoring, lectures and mentoring are able to prep us entering into the battlefield. All we know is that we have to look good during our first interview and polish our resumes nicely. But what happens after that?
We at Hype Pulse, realise that stepping into the working world can be nerve-wracking hence we have put together on a list of weapons for you fresh grads out there!

1. LEARN, UNLEARN, RELEARN & REPEAT!
This is not from the books! Being able to learn is an easy task to perform, however, to unlearn what the books had taught you and to relearn what worked before does not mean it applies to all circumstances can be quite tough on fresh grads. Get comfortable with change as it should be the only constant in life. One should always be in a constant state of being a student - get passionate about learning and discovering. Being agile and flexible is what sets you apart from your colleagues.
2. ALL WORK & NO PLAY?
One of the most heard sentences especially from new working fresh grads is “no work-life balance”. Work-life balance is one of the most important aspects of your working career. It helps in reducing stress and to recalibrate your mental health. Whilst at it, most fresh grads had neglected their health as they grind and hustle through by having overtime (OT) and even working during weekends. Fresh grads should strike a balance between both work and play, it can be achieved in small steps such as going to work earlier so you are able to finish your tasks by 6.30 pm. Prioritizing your health is important as without health, there is no work.

3. ALWAYS LIVE YOUR LIFE!
Just because you have a full-time job doesn’t mean you have to put your life on hold! Remember that you are still in your youth, this only happens once so go out there and pursue a hobby or travel the world. Life is too short for you to be restrained to only your workload. Take time off to do what you love, go to places that you never visited or even try something new. Find the enthusiasm in life and fulfil what your heart’s desires, because you are only young once.
4. NETWORK! NETWORK! NETWORK!
Do take note that your first job is not forever! Always remember to expand your social circle by going to networking events or even through meetings. Connections that you foster during your stay there is extremely valuable for your future. Build a rapport with clients, bosses, colleagues and even people out of your company because you may never know when do they come in handy. Side tip, set up a LinkedIn profile and connect with them there. You will get more insights when you are connected with them on that platform.
5. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
With the hard work that you have invested in your projects, you should constantly keep track of your accomplishments. In that way, it is easier for you to share the fruits of your labour during meetings, networking sessions and future interviews. We always get swamped daily in work operations and tasks to the point of not seeing the bigger picture. Make sure to jot down the lists of your accomplishments and do not forget to update them from time to time! Also, you can add these cherries onto your LinkedIn profile.
To sum up, feeling lost and insecure about the working world is a normal thing to do. Your world will unexpectedly have a 360-degree change and those carefree university days are long gone. But if you follow the weapons above, you are more then ready to get into the battlefield while getting the most of out of it! With that said, all the best soldiers!
